Elixir compiles to bytecode for the Erlang VM/BEAM. Erlang + OTP = scalable/fault-tolerant distributed systems. Phoenix is closely coupled with OTP. Not sure if Trello itself requires it or benefits from it, but any distributed system can benefit from this architecture.
