I had the same problem when I was young. So much ear wax after a particularly bad cold that it prevented me to hear clearly. It lasted a long time, definitely more than a day. My mother put a few drops of olive oil in my ear, and told me to lie down so the oil would stay in the ear. After a few minutes of this, suddenly I heard crackling in my ear. I decided to yawn... and I heard this huge "CRRRRACK" sound from inside my ear, felt a very weird sensation as the oil found its way past the wax buildup, and suddenly I could hear clearly. It was glorious.
