I have trained German Shepherd Dogs for Schutzhund competition for years. I have three right now. I can make them do just about anything I want on command. And that does not mean verbal commands. A look, a flick of a finger, gesture, even moving my foot. I am not saying this is what happened here, but I'd be careful to trust a dog unless the training was absolutely 100% verified not to have trained anything that could allow the handler to command the dog to "hit".
