You all are forgetting one thing. Without ads google would not exist, without ads facebook couldn't exist and expand, make research. If everybody will block ads then you will see decline in free sites.
- stonogo 11y agoI have never forgotten this. It's my primary motivating factor in mercilessly blocking ads and ad servers, both within my browser and at my routers, both at home and at work. If someone wants to make money off of me, they're free to send me a bill. If their content isn't valuable enough to sell directly, why should I waste my bandwidth and RAM monetizing their garbage? A world without Facebook and Google sounds wonderful. Sign me up; I'm willing to pay.
- petercooper 11y agoIt was called 1997. You can go back there by connecting over a 56k modem and using Netscape 2.
- devopsproject 11y agoYou are forgetting one thing: Google ads were simple text and non-invasive. Ads today tell me to rotate my phone to play a full screen video, play noise, track me, hide content between 10 clicks, infect my computer with malware, etc. They can all die, no one will miss them.
- chris_wot 11y agoI've never cared about Google ads because they are totally unobtrusive. In fact, I actually have clicked on a Google ad at least a few times in the past. On the other hand, I have literally never clicked on a non-text ad on a browser, except accidentally due to some sort of dark patterns.
