I got around the tab issue by knowing Chinese. My longest tab name length is 3. Everything else is 2. Doesn't help you much I'm sure (although you could try things like TD for To Do) but I'm quite pleased with the solution! 計畫, 家服, etc.

That's quite clever! Yeah doesn't directly help me but I'll think about the abbreviations as that's not a bad idea.
