The thing that really got it through for me was reading other people's configurations, specifically Bernt Hansen's. http://doc.norang.ca/org-mode.html http://doc.norang.ca/org-mode.html Seeing how someone else who lives on the platform does their configuration helped put it in perspective, then I just cherry-picked the ideas I liked from there in building my own.
