I remember when XP shipped and people bemoaned the Tinker Toy GUI that it came with. Years later people are still complaining about change in the UI of operating systems by Microsoft. At least with Windows 10 they seem to be dedicated to sticking with something for a while as they plan to continuously update the same OS for a long while.
- userbinator 11y agoI remember when XP shipped and people bemoaned the Tinker Toy GUI that it came with. One that could easily be turned back into the look of the previous version, with the Windows Classic theme. Because it was bitmap-based, it also enabled a lot of interesting theming possibilities. Not so with Win10. At least with Windows 10 they seem to be dedicated to sticking with something for a while as they plan to continuously update the same OS for a long while. It won't be "the same OS" for long if they "continuously update" it... that and the forced updates mean that MS can effectively completely change the UI any time they want, and there's very little users most users can/will do about it. Even the fact that it will still called "Windows 10" means it gets a lot harder to refer to what exactly the OS is. It's a new era of learned helplessness and corporate control.

Perhaps a date based naming scheme like CentOS might help as updates are universal outside the corporate sector? https://wiki.centos.org/FAQ/General#head-dcca41e9a3d5ac4c6d900a991990fd11930867d6 https://wiki.centos.org/FAQ/General#head-dcca41e9a3d5ac4c6d9...
- tiernano 11y agoIt's already being done. November update to win10 is the 1511 version...
- keithpeter 11y agoSo now we have to encourage all users reporting issues to give the date reference...
- cm2187 11y agoWindows XP was very close to Windows 2000. I have not met any windows 2000/XP user that missed windows 98, even in the first few minutes of using it.
- godzillabrennus 11y agoPlenty of people complained about lots of hardware didn't work after that transition. Drivers for dos/9X didn't work on NT / 2K / XP at all.
- JoBrad 11y agoI heard quite a few people who (even after Windows 7 came out) were complaining that MS made DOS harder to boot into with Win 95.
