Well, most families didn't have computers for a long time, but they did have televisions. Buying a console was much cheaper (and easier to understand). I think that sort of became the SOP as opposed to computers during the rise of gaming. Oh and let's not forget Shigeru Miyamoto's awesomeness helping out :)
