The best available evidence we (humans) have suggests that we're finite beings...and we don't much like the idea of that... The angst that accompanies knowing that what you were conscious of before your birth likely approximates what you will be conscious of following your death has driven thinkers to posit myriad explanations...none are completely testable, but the scientific postulates are at least open to the rigors of the scientific method, most notably peer review... If either science or philosophy must be subsumed, I'd rather it be philosophy... Personally, I prefer a life containing both...
