This parallels how I try to approach learning. For me, the "meta" idea is that I need some kind of mental model / framework before I can learn many details. Once that framework is there I can hang new knowledge on it without much trouble. So steps 1 and 2 are geared toward building that framework. Step 3 is about making things, which is where you'll spend a lot of time acquiring a lot of in-depth knowledge.
