There is another problem with not using the tracking device in the future. If the companies design the tracker to use CAN bus data then the people with older vehicles(even relatively safer older vehicles) are out of luck. Not even Chrysler completely stopped using their proprietary CCD bus until around 2006. Hopefully they would design the trackers to be mostly independent by putting the accelerometers in the unit itself.
