I'm always surprised DC isn't higher on the list for tourists. The museums alone make it worth the trip. If you're already in NYC, it's a pretty short train ride (by American standards at least) to DC. I think it's about 3 hours by Amtrak, just a bit longer than the Eurostar from London to Paris.
