It always amuses me that that it's "Turin, Italy" but "Providence, Rhode Island". I guess they assume an American audience but it's still strange that they don't mention the country for places in the US of A.
- jpatokal 11y agoIt's also "Kansai, Japan", which is kind of like declaring that "East Coast, USA" is now hip. Kansai, if the name doesn't ring a bell, being the broad region that contains 7 Japanese prefectures (~states), the cities of Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe, and a total of around 22 million people.
- davegardner 11y agoI find it mildly amusing that you used the term "American audience" in the context of your comment.
- jerf 11y agoThe New York Times is still, despite its reach, a newspaper for New York, New York, US. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/08/nyregion/new-york-today-in-case-of-cabin-fever.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fnyregion http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/08/nyregion/new-york-today-in...
- pc86 11y agoHave you read the New York times? As someone who lives ~5 hours away from New York, it is still occasionally hyper-local to where I don't recognize the names of places it mentions. I have no idea why an American newspaper, NYT or otherwise, would be writing for anything other than an American audience.
- jedrek 11y agoOne thing that's weird for a lot of Europeans is that the US has exactly one national newspaper, USA Today. All the other papers are local: NYC, Chicago, LA, Baltimore, etc. The NY Times is a great paper but go past above the fold and is local stories.
- crossman 11y agoLiving in Providence, I find it amusing their picture is from Watch Hill, which is as far away from Providence as you can get and still technically be in Rhode Island.
- sliverstorm 11y agoItaly is about the same size as New Mexico. Perhaps it is reasonable to expect, if people know Italy is in Europe, that they might also know Rhode Island is in the United States?
