It's the same here in Lithuania, when Uber started to become popular a few years ago the taxi companies joined forces and launched their own apps (there are two main competing apps). I don't understand how US taxi companies have been so oblivious to this, given each one in major cities probably has more cabs than the whole country does here :D Uber finally launched a couple of months ago, but it's more expensive and doesn't have as many cars.
