Isn't that lack of knowledge caused in part by the CDC funding ban [1]? Studying gun control in the US also requires some care: because of the population configuration, you need to take into account the fact that people can bring guns from one jurisdiction to the next, especially in some Eastern cities, like Washington, DC (right next to Virginia) or Baltimore (~50 miles from Virginia). Violent crime and homicides have been going down all over the richer countries, but the US rate is still much higher than that of say, Canada or the UK.
