Yikes. Being on call is fine but it really ought to a) be spelled out in advance and b) be rotated among several people so you don't end up wasting more than a weekend a month, tops. Of course, I know people who theoretically are on sane on-call schedules but as it turns out, because of irresponsible co-workers that shirk their on-call duties they ended up being called as a last resort...
