Laptops seem to last less than 10 years and PCs less than 20 years. If we assume that the catastrophe takes out chip manufacturing plants so that no new laptops are forthcoming, what can the survivalist do? Perhaps buy many laptops, but I'm not sure what the unused shelf-life of them is. At the very least they should remove the CMOS batteries from them for long term storage.. A related question is how to preserve library machines long enough for civilization to restart.
