It'd be kinda cool if there were a filesystem which were the unholy offspring of venti and git (with garbage collection) and the ability to roll back to any non-GCed point in time. Of course that'd only get one so far, and eventually one would still need backups. But it sure would be convenient.
- colindean 11y agoThere was, IIRC. I think it was Cobind Linux that had something like this, although I don't think it was at the filesystem level. I could be confusing it with another distro, though. This was in the early 2000s.

- z3t4 11y agoZFS has snapshots with no duplication and little overhead. You can for example have rolling snapshots, so that you can get the state of a special file say seven days ago, or one month ago, without saving "backups". But of course you should also have backups, but on another system/offsite/offline.
- JoachimSchipper 11y agoAnything with snapshots (ZFS/btrfs, Linux' LVM, etc.) can get you some of the way there; e.g. (Open)VMS apparently had/has versioned-by-default files; the HAMMER filesystem explicitly makes this a feature. Alternatively, run something like tarsnap once per hour.
