Page size is part of user experience, however. If you've ever visited another part of the world where Internet is awful or tried to use 3/4G on a mobile with bad signal, you immediately start to hate web sites that take forever to load what amounts to a page of text, which, if it were merely a HTML file containing the text, would still load immediately even on dial-up quality connection or less. Most people don't know this. Programmers do, and people who remember 90's Internet. Taking this into account, comparing against books is not too weird.
- manigandham 11y agoThe point was that text is obviously much leaner and highly compressible - if you just discount the images like that then the web is already very fast. You have to take into account the entire experience and realize that images are a big part of the modern web. I definitely agree there's a major cruft problem but I believe most browsers already have the ability to disable loading images which gives the client the power to adjust for their network connection.
- pitay 11y agoAnother huge annoyance with mobile devices is webpages that load some of it then crash the browser with all the JavaScript that it loads. So on an iPad 2 using Safari, load page, crash, reload, crash, reload ...
