I still, deep inside, hold a dwindling hope that all humans can one day learn to treat humans as humans. Basically, literally, to treat others as they themselves would like to be treated. As humans. It saddens me to hear of times when that doesn't happen, particularly in such devastating ways that affect someone's life so fundamentally.
