This type of behaviour is common in the United States. Weren't there some elected officials in the US who were adamantly anti-gay rights until their own daughters and sons came out as gay? And then they had a change of heart in order to not destroy their kids with the same legislation that they voted for themselves for years and years on end. As flawed humans it's not hard to understand. It never seems to hit home until you experience it yourself. This is a call for getting a more diverse group in positions where they can change legislation and actually make things better for people. I'd welcome the day when the US elects into governing position a convicted criminal who's served their time and is interested in changing the legal system for the better.
