You mention the elderly; can't find the link now but I read a very sad story about a man who cleans up houses in Japan after a person has died in them. Many suicides and many more elderly who just died alone out of neglect. Also, on the suicide rate, seems like Japan is a ways down the list at 9th place with a rate of 28.2 per 100,000 (for years 1985 - 2015) [1].
