The storyline was incredibly shallow, basically just an amalgamation of scenes from the last six episodes. On the plus side, the characters are a lot more convincing and very well acted. (Even though I still don't understand why JJ Abrams chose to add a female storm trooper captain, that somehow doesn't feel right. Glad to see some more diversity than in the previous the movies though.) Also, I like the sense of history that pervades the everything. I can understand if some people consider it too nostalgic, but IMO it adds a lot of depth to the movie world. On the whole it was a film I very much enjoyed watching, even though I wish Abrams had been a bit more creative with his plot.
