- Piskvorrr 11y agoIt's a new thing, they started coming out of the labs a season or two ago: http://news.pocsports.com/2015/10/13/poc-and-inmotion-introduce-airbag-safety-for-skiers/ http://news.pocsports.com/2015/10/13/poc-and-inmotion-introd...
- frik 11y agoIt's very new. "The airbag is in this debut season by no means standard. Because many drivers believe he would impede on the track. Others fear aerodynamic deficiencies and malfunctions. In addition, the Italian manufacturer Dainese many teams not supplied as outfitters. And so had the sixth race this winter in addition to Mayer only five further downhill in Val Gardena over the air bag striped, four Austrians and two Canadians." (from the source above)
- comrh 11y agoTo clarify these are airbags designed to protect you in a downhill crash (which are usually very violent for big alpine riders) but avalanche airbags that help you rise to the top of the stream of snow have been pretty standard equipment for the past ~5 years.
- at-fates-hands 11y agoThis sounds very much like the slow adoption of the HANS Device in NASCAR. The guy who developed said he sold maybe 200 in the first ten years. That all changed when Dale Earnhardt died of a basilar skull fracture, and then the drivers lined up to get them. It's now standard equipment on all NASCAR vehicles. http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-media/articles/2012/09/11/ups-hans-device.html http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-media/articles/2012/09/11/u...
- ablation 11y agoDainese (and others) have made airbags for professional motorcycle racers for several years now too. It's quite interesting tech.
- vesrah 11y agoNot only that, but Alpinestars sells a street jacket with an airbag system - along with their race suit. Hit Air (a system worn over your suit) has been in use by track riders for a couple of years now.
- durandal1 11y agoDainese are also selling their D-Air system in the US now.
- agumonkey 11y agoI've seen absorber-jacket things, when I read air bag I picture a real airbag on a plastron.
- braythwayt 11y agoAirbags have been in use for equestrian sports for quite some time. A number of the manufacturers offer models for equestrian, power sports, or both.
