I've tried Bekant and Galant in Ikea and by try I meant I added my laptop bag, extension cord and a 15" MacBook Pro on the table. I also put a full glass of water on it. Essentially I tried to simulate real world use.
Kinda disappointed. The ones I got try were wobbly. Not sure if there is a setting to do but I couldn't type without shaking my screen. Didn't have that experience with the more expensive electronic stand up desks in other offices. Just a heads up. Might just be some config issue or something.
- drcursor 11y agoI actually find this one to be quite sturdy, even at full height it doesn't wobble. Maybe more to do with the way they have them setup at IKEA stores? As you can see on my setup I have a monitor, and 2 laptops on top of the table.
- seivan 11y agoThat's really reassuring to hear as that's pretty much all I can afford. I got a refurbished used desk and it wobbles but not as bad as the ones I tried at IKEA. Will give it another go! Thanks!
- jmartini 11y agoI was looking into the Jarvis legs (similar price point, $490 that has programmable heights) and using a cheap Ikea top. Don't know about sturdiness...but the reviews look good. http://www.ergodepot.com/Jarvis_Frame_p/jrv-fr.htm http://www.ergodepot.com/Jarvis_Frame_p/jrv-fr.htm
- taurath 11y agoWe bought these for our coders at my previous company and I still own one at home. Works great still after 3 years. I bought an IKEA bekant tabletop for it http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40253236/ http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40253236/ which was plenty of space. I find a monitor riser is required as well for actually standing up and not craning my neck.
- pasbesoin 11y agoI was looking for another table-as-desk at IKEA a few months ago. I was surprised to find the electric height-adjusting Bekant, and even more surprised to find it on sale for circa $400-420 (about $80 off, IIRC). Anyway, my father and I (his van, for transportation) spent some time talking with the area's sales associate, who was older and knowledgeable and had been with IKEA for six or seven years as a supplementary career/job. They explained, particularly with reference to the electric unit, that families let their kids climb all over the floor models. Invariably, they become stressed/loosened up and less stable. I was actually looking for a Galant table with the four individual angled, height-adjustable metal legs that mount rather sturdily to an underside metal frame. But... they no longer carry that item. (The sales associate agreed to the foolishness of this, asserting, 'If only they would ask us out on the floor what the customers want.') I ended up instead with a (fixed height) Bekant (for approximately 50% more than the Galant I was seeking). It is not "wobbly" but it is a bit less stable than the Galant, to the point where it shakes a bit if/when I type aggressively. On the upside, its less stable pillar-to-large-feet two-leg design mean that the legs are more out of the way than with the Galant's angled legs, making it more comfortable when two are put together in an L configuration. Anyway, I was told by a sales person so take with a grain of salt, but apparently particularly customers with kids subject the floor display units to a lot of abuse.
