This is just totally stupid. No, no a bunch of opinionated tech snobs not installing flash is never going to impact the market enough to impact the language. The fact is that the new flash VM is actually very good and delivers a sophisticated UI framework that is actually very pleasant to work with. There is a movement to merge AS3 with actionscript as well. The reality is that we're all just writing distributed applications with increasingly thick clients.
- JoachimSchipper 17y agoInDesign is reputedly very good, but it's hard to argue that the Adobe PDF reader is equally good - it's bloated, full of security problems, etcetera. Similarly, Adobe's Flash design tools may be cool; but the Flash client sucks. The anti-Flash sentiment wouldn't be quite as prominent if there were a decent, lightweight open-source Flash player that ran well everywhere. (Of course, the semantic web people would still hate Flash.)
- keefe 17y agoHilariously I worked at one of the most well known semweb companies working on a flash client for 3 years :] I'm not talking about using flash design to make stuff, I'm talking about AS3 which runs in the new VM 9+ which is actually a full featured programming language.
- keefe 17y agoShould read as3 and javascript, don't know how to edit on phone
- Locke1689 17y agoThe fact is that the new flash VM is actually very good and delivers a sophisticated UI framework that is actually very pleasant to work with. The Flash VM is shit on everything but Windows. Anyone who thinks that it is a well written piece of software is deluding themselves.
- rabidgnat 17y agoIn the Flash VM's defense, the new alpha releases work pretty well on Ubuntu 9.10 x64. My laptop still can't handle two Youtube videos at once, but there's a lot less flickering and I haven't seen the 'flash crashed' gray square in a while
- keefe 17y agoI've had 9 and 10 running on linux for years without a single problem, always fast and pixel to pixel identical with windows and mac? Maybe the problem is not the VM but the manner in which it is installed?
- ZeroGravitas 17y agoI wouldn't underestimate the power of a small number of geeks. If 100,000 ordinary people are blocked from Flash because Adobe thought dealing with their device was beneath them, then nothing much is going to happen. If 100,000 geeks can't access a site on their iPhone then you're going to see an alternative or two arise. I've been using solutions on both Ubuntu and Mac OS X to let me view Youtube content without Flash for about a year. You don't think the existance and ecstatic use of these tools sends a message to those within Google, even if only the fellow geeks?
- keefe 17y agoI'm all for alternate solutions. Adobe and flash are not going anywhere, good luck to anyone that chooses to compete with them. It's all going to merge soon enough, I think.
