I've also had hundreds of subsequent conversations with those people that revealed significant accomplishments. CVs are better than nothing. But there's no set way to write them that's widely known, and people tend to be rather reticent about their own accomplishments - perhaps not even thinking of them as such. There's a lot of value being left on the table.
