It seems to me if bytes/unicode was the only breaking change we would probably be over the transition by now. There are a lot of other subtle changes that makes the transition harder: comparison changes and keys() being an iterator for example. These are good long term changes, but I wish they weren't bundled in with the bytes/unicode changes.
