  I think something can be said about the simplicity of symbols (e.g., the number of lines/curves)

    Particularly when the simple symbols are so-called Hindu-Arabic i.e. European digits, which are very universal (even though Chinese and Eastern Arabic also do have own glyphs for numbers, the Hindu-Arabic numbers are ubiquitous.)
