> “Frankly, I think you should just work at Tesla,” Musk wrote to Hotz in an e-mail. “I’m happy to work out a multimillion-dollar bonus with a longer time horizon that pays out as soon as we discontinue Mobileye.”
> “I appreciate the offer,” Hotz replied, “but like I’ve said, I’m not looking for a job. I’ll ping you when I crush Mobileye.”

I have to agree with Elon here, Hotz is such a good fit there. But Hotz knows best, if he thinks he can take down Mobileye then he did the right decision, sucks that Tesla wouldn't back it. I'm sure other car companies would buy Hotz's software
- ocdtrekkie 11y agoI'd be far more interested in a piece of software for my car put out by Hotz than either Google or Tesla. Because the latter two are almost certainly going to keep it proprietary as heck. (Tesla has notoriously actually called people to ask them to stop tinkering with their car when they detect the interface has been connected to.)
- lintiness 11y agoyou're sure to have a more interesting ride with hotz's software.

- ocdtrekkie 11y agoWe'll see where things get in the future. If I wasn't sure where I was going yet, I might hold a few things close to the vest initially too. There's a short-term value too, where he has to ensure Google or Tesla or Uber doesn't become too dominant first. I really hope self-driving systems are an ecosystem, not a monoculture.
- ProAm 11y agoI dont think there is anyway that Hotz's and Musk's personalities get along well in any type of working relationship. They are both difficult people to deal with (from an outsiders perspective).
- Xcelerate 11y agoThat's the funny thing about INTJs; they don't seem to get along well with each other. (*cue the preemptive disclaimer about MBTI being for entertainment)
- yaboyhud 11y agoHotz is an ENTP actually so the two of them would get along extraordinarily well, assuming ego's weren't in the way...
- Xcelerate 11y agoAh, indeed. I forgot the part where he mentions that he doesn't like living alone. You sure about the P though? His thoughts on his projects include lots of specific plans and he seems rather certain about his decisions (whereas P types tend to get caught in a quagmire of possibilities).
- shostack 11y agoAgree, but I'm sure Musk has a tremendous amount of respect for Hotz not only turning down millions to forge his own path, but also for simply executing. Hotz is putting his money where his mouth is and that is something Elon has a lot of first hand experience with.
