Yeah, if that was the main theme, it'd drop subscribers. But a lot of podcasts will just have a note at the end, "If you want to support me being able to do this full time, donate! Set up a recurring donation and I'll send you [some cheap swag]." Then they can talk about meeting their goal, and how donations keep them free of influence from sponsors, and how it will improve the content if everyone gave just $1. NPR even does that sort of thing. There more and less classy ways to beg for money.
