Building Filtron, a new photo editing platform for Mac and iOS
- coryl 11y agoCurious about the rationalization behind creating yet another photo filters app. There are quite a few of them on iOS, its very competitive and they are all quite polished.
- earlyriser 11y agoFor months I've been waiting for something like Priime for Mac, I know iOS is inundated with this kind of apps, but I couldn't find something enjoyable to use as Priime and ready to work with the thousands of pics living in my computer (faster, bigger screen, all my pics live there). I even wrote the team with the suggestion and I'm fine with paying a fair amount for it. I still haven't used Filtron but it looks promising, congrats to the team. EDIT: What could be a greta addition is to suggest filters based on the picture. Or at least indicate in what's the best use of each filter... the nenufar demo doesn't make it evident.
- danpalmer 11y agoThis development process seems to exemplify Apple and the old-school third party ecosystem Mac ecosystem (that in part transitioned to iOS). Where is the constant iteration to find exactly what users want? That said, if the aim is to become a sustainable small business, rather than a billion-dollar VC funded company with no profits, maybe you don't have to get it right, maybe you can afford to be a way off the mark and still do ok? I'm not saying that Filtron is way off the mark, but what are the chances they made exactly what users want, straight off?
- michaelbuckbee 11y agoTL;DR (though you should read the whole thing) - they've spend $100k+ dollars and just launched a free app with some IAP filter upgrades. The article starts with saying how hard and crazy it is to build and an app and then runs through the empirical experiences as just why that's the case. However, I think there's a flaw in the initial idea here where the level of difficulty in pulling something like this off nowdays is just astronomical. I've been using the 3Axes framework [1] for evaluating ideas like this and this just seems incredibly difficult to execute on profitably. Very consumer focused, more a tool than a done-for-you service and really no pain that it's solving. 1 - https://medium.com/@mbuckbee/the-3-axes-of-startup-difficulty-cad7c1ff6950#.5fbswu6ew https://medium.com/@mbuckbee/the-3-axes-of-startup-difficult...
