To be fair most founding myths are about a "hero" revolting against the current status quo : Zeus, Odin, Prometheus, Gilgamesh, etc. So I don't think this is only an "American" things, or related to individualism. But obviously Daesh is using that same proto-myth to appeal to potential recruits : be a hero fighting to overthrow an evil empire, and establish a new golden age
