Meanwhile the leading candidates from both US parties want to trample on our Fourth Amendment rights by weakening encryption and installing backdoors.
"Somebody will say, 'Oh freedom of speech, freedom of speech.' These are foolish people. We have a lot of foolish people." -Donald Trump[1]
"You’re going to hear all of the usual complaints, you know, freedom of speech, et cetera..." -Hillary Clinton[1]

- 7952 11y agoSomeone should build an encrypted cell phone into an assault rifle. They would never be able to ban that.
- briandear 11y agoYou're ok with 2nd Amendment violations but are concerned about the 4th? The Bill of Rights isn't a buffet.
- acchow 11y agoMore like disagrees with this interpretation of the 2nd amendment.
- A_COMPUTER 11y agoIf only crypto users were as vocal and organized as gun owners. We could call our organization the National Rijndael Association.
- paulddraper 11y agoLast I checked, people had been successful in banning "assault" rifles. I'm not aware of a time in the US where encryption was banned for the populace.
- mhurron 11y agoThe number of presidential candidates that look at the constitution as a hindrance is scary.
- peterhadlaw 11y agoThe thing is though, they don't realize that they see the constitution as a hindrance.
- mhurron 11y agoYou're not making it any better.
- paulddraper 11y agoI would say the same for a lot of HNers.
- peterhadlaw 11y agoA couple coworkers of mine and I have devised a perfect strategy to combat the anti-encryption/ anti-privacy movement. Since logic and reason do not work, start asking people who work against encryption / privacy and the people who also have those views, "Why do you hate America? Why do you hate freedom and the bald eagle?" This will surely gather people on the correct side.
- crdoconnor 11y agoThere seem to be a lot more people who shrug their shoulders and say that they have nothing to hide or they aren't very interesting than there are people who are actively against encryption. This is very much a case of manufacturing consent rather than support.
- cognivore 11y agoI have found another one as well. When someone is spouting off some anti-American B.S. I just ask, "You seem radicalized. Should I be afraid of you?" "Radicalized" is such an awesome put down for extremists now that the media have taken off and run with it. Just asking that question of a holocaust denier handing out pamphlets got them to leave in embarrassment.
- peterhadlaw 11y agoYou seem radicalized ;) XD (This is great btw.)
- briandear 11y agoInteresting how people complain about violating the 4th Amendment but act outraged over the 2nd. One could argue eliminating both would make us safer. It's also interesting how the pro-4th crowd seems to often fall into the anti-2nd crowd. Too much hypocrisy these days from the politicians. It would also seem that the 10th is often ignored as well.
