Do current AAPL/GOOG/FB engineers dislike this so much? There's secrecy within most for-profit entities, what makes AI so different?

Admittedly, that line is more blurry than most, especially in highly technologically competitive fields like AI and graphics (and less blurry in fields where the research-to-implementation gap is larger, like PL or algorithmic complexity).
- pzone 11y agoSuppose you're a researcher doing something cool at Microsoft. If some OSS project sees your academic paper "Hey, that's awesome, I want to try this out in my new project!" you have to say "Sorry, Microsoft owns patents on everything I did, you're gonna have to pay a few million dollars for a license."
- lololomg 11y agoI don't have any insider information here but I guess it's because AI researchers want to be published?
