The problem is that there aren't good adblockers for mobile, in my experience.
On Android, Chrome doesn't support extensions so standard extensions are out. However, you can get Firefox Mobile for it, which is actually my favourite browser on Android, and it supports standard extensions so you can load ublock Origin for it. App-type adblockers seem to require rooting.
On iOS, I have yet to see a trustworthy/good blocker. I know of Purify, but the author is Chris Aljoudi and after the ublock thing, I'm never touching any of his code. Then there's the Adblock Plus browser thing, but I don't want to use a separate browser - plus, they soured me with the "acceptable ads" stuff. So basically what I want is ublock for iOS.
- slig 11y agoI've been using Focus by Firefox on iOS for a couple of days, seems to be working fine. HN discussion from 3 days ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10696378 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10696378
- gtufano 11y agoFocus by Firefox seems pretty good and (IMHO) is trustworthy: https://support.mozilla.org/kb/focus https://support.mozilla.org/kb/focus
- noinsight 11y agoI got the impression it only blocks trackers, not ads, is that not so? Then it could be great.
- kemayo 11y agoThe Brooks Review has a decent comparison of the iOS ones, at least: https://brooksreview.net/2015/12/content-blockers/ https://brooksreview.net/2015/12/content-blockers/ Doesn't necessarily touch the "trustworthy" side of things, admittedly.
- Splines 11y ago> App-type adblockers seem to require rooting. I use Adaway on my Android phone. I do sympathize with content owners, the reason I use Adaway is because it has a significant impact on the mobile browsing experience. Limited screen space, higher sensitivity to network traffic, and less available CPU mean that blocking ads on mobile is even more important to the user experience.
