UBI is sometimes framed as a negative income tax. This would also benefit middle income families, by automatically lowering their taxable income. Perhaps along the lines of what you meant by progressive taxation. (I have not personally seen much meaningful opposition to UBI. It would be good to hear more meaningful criticism of the ideas.)
