I think as long as Google isn't dumb enough to let go its pioneer engineering team members they are still the front runner. The only thing is that they don't have the a manufacturing capability. Now that they poached Tesla's lead engineer in the area, a Tesla - Google join force is actually more likely, Tesla has more need for Google now.
