A biologist, a mathematician, and a computer scientist walk into a foobar
- brudgers 11y agoThe embedded video presentation is high quality and informative...after the opening remarks from the podium. https://youtu.be/iHazsSvn3VA https://youtu.be/iHazsSvn3VA
- daveguy 11y agoThe speaker starts at 5 min 38 sec into the presentation. This should link to the direct start time: https://youtu.be/iHazsSvn3VA?t=5m38s https://youtu.be/iHazsSvn3VA?t=5m38s Edit: And continues from background ML/Bio to core talk at 11 min 50 sec here: https://youtu.be/iHazsSvn3VA?t=11m50s https://youtu.be/iHazsSvn3VA?t=11m50s Edit: Focus is on design of experiments using bayesian analysis Edit: Second half is at 32 min 22 sec and is more focused on synthetic biology / information processing in biomolecular systems: https://youtu.be/iHazsSvn3VA?t=32m22s https://youtu.be/iHazsSvn3VA?t=32m22s very cool biomolecular computation info in the last section
- jbloom22 11y agoGlad you liked his talk! Yeah, you can tell that Aviv and I were not mic'ed as Ryan was, so we had to boost our audio.
- nevereverreg 11y agoFUBAR=Fvcked up beyond all recognition Remember that next time someone tries using foobar in their example.
- krylon 11y agoThe title sounded like the setup for an awesome joke. The problem is, now I want to hear that joke! :(
- jbloom22 11y agoI wrote the title and blog post (that's me looking all awkward at the beginning of the video). Originally I wanted to just write "walk into a foo", but the reference was deemed too oblique for biologists, even with the hyperlink. Would love to hear your ideas for the rest of the joke!
- krylon 11y agoFirst of all: Best. Title. Ever. Second: I am not a comedian. For a good reason: If I was, I could not afford to sit in a heated apartment or use electricity. I kind of feel reminded of the one where a biologist, a mathematician, a physicist, and a computer scientist are riding a train, look out the window and see a black sheep. "Oh," says the biologist, "sheep around here are black." - "Well," replies the mathematician, "all we know for sure is that at least one sheep around here is black." - "Strictly speaking," adds the physicist, "all we know is that it looks black from this side, viewed from this angle in this light, and so forth.". "Oh no", goes the computer scientist. "Not another special case!" There are many, many variations of this joke around, but it has no bar, of course, let alone a foobar. I am still trying to imagine what kind of place a foobar would be. Either really funny or kind of scary, I guess.
- AnimalMuppet 11y ago> Second: I am not a comedian. For a good reason: If I was, I could not afford to sit in a heated apartment or use electricity. For what it's worth, I laughed out loud at that line.
- AnimalMuppet 11y agoI'll take a stab at it (fools rush in where professionals fear to tread): The biologist says "another new species to categorize!" The mathematician says "I don't see how the foobar follows from the rest of the proof." The computer scientist says "that variable is badly named", and renames it. The biologist mourns another species lost to extinction.

- ruztik 11y agoHey! Give me my joke!
- 0xdeadbeefbabe 11y agoOuch
- jbloom22 11y agoI gave you the lead in, now you provide the rest!
