This is not about "being yourself"-euphemism for doing as you please with utter disregard for everything including yourself-, this is about taking responsibility for your actions, about having the honesty and strong enough morals to judge. The "being yourself" vs "chasing one's potential" you talk about is the difference between animal and human.
