It seems like a good way to support Tor would be to open exit nodes.
And a good way to promote that would be to sell pre-configured, "just plug in power and ethernet" Raspberry Pi.
- dest 11y agoIMO, the major challenge of hosting an open exit node is the legal burden of receiving complaints about Tor traffic. I am not sure a PnP Tor RPi would help on that point.
- ironlady 11y agoAgreed, Ive run a few nodes on and off for years, and to date I still have one in the neatherlands running however I have never run an exit node, because I'm just too nervous of the legality around it.
- phw 11y agoRaspberry Pis don't make very good relays. They don't have enough CPU power to relay non-trivial amounts of data, and slow relays that clog easily aren't useful to the network.
- listic 11y agoOdroid C1+ is a better alternative, as it has hardware gigabit Ethernet and still inexpensive ($35). [1] Raspberry Pi's have USB-based Ethernet; it has poor throughput and I heard reports of Ethernet hanging under load. It's better to have something with proper hardware networking and, ideally, disk controller for heavy usage scenarios.
