To take your last sentence only slightly more tangential: The problem with the Tivo is the $15/mo fee (i.e. $150/yr) for what is essentially an EPG. The Channel Master provides essentially the same thing except it is $250 up front w/o any fees.
Also, the Roku allows one to make private channels to stream media on your LAN or share with friends across the internet. I don't understand the interest of technical people in any other box (e.g. Apple TV).
