I will reply before your comment disappears into oblivion (which it will and should):
No, no, a thousand times no, because there is nothing wrong with being a woman.
Everyone's gender, man, woman, or however they see it, is part of what makes them a human being. It makes up a part of your identity whether you're conscious of it or not.
Announcing your gender is no more "attention whoring" (itself an awful, loaded phrase) than announcing that you're a student, that you're a teenager, that you're old, that you drive a Chevelle, whatever.
That people will attack you simply for being a woman reflects wholly on them, and how awful they are as people (or possibly, to be charitable, just immature and ignorant about the world).
Your defense of that is shameful, and you should take time to reflect on your world view, because it will not serve you well as you move through life.
- bigguy4u 11y agoNice straw man. If 4chan is made up of 99% females and I go in there and declare that I am male. I would expect nothing less. The fact is, you think they are being specialed out because they are women, no, they are being attacked by trying curry favours because they are different. They are not being attacked for being different, they are attacked for exploiting their differences. It is the same with people who use tripcodes to standout from the mob. The fact that you are no understanding of the 4chan dynamic and come here to lecture about 4chan culture is a bit rich.
- anon4 11y agoPsst. This is the "usual" anonymous 4chan account, made after anonymous was overtaken by a cumguzzling shitstain and had its password changed. Use this, don't suffer bad karma.
- knowaveragejoe 11y agoI think what he's saying is that on an anonymous message board, there is no reason to bring gender into the conversation other than when it's explicitly relevant. Announcing or displaying your gender(or anything else about your identity) is to depart from the concept of anonymity. It doesn't make moral or ethical sense to me, but it does make logical sense. They see identity as a cry for being "special", and there's probably some serious immaturity at play in attacking that itself. Drag you down to their level of sameness, so to speak.
- Ntrails 11y agoAnnouncing your gender is no [different ]than announcing that you're a student, that you're a teenager... But if the very definition of a "user" is around anonymity then by declaring a personal information you kind of are attempting to make the conversation about you (which I presume is contrary to the whole point of 4chan?). I honestly don't know whether 4chan would pass the acid test of "is declaring gender indeed treated the same as declaring ones shoe size". If it did though (a big if) - I'd have a problem demonizing the behaviour. I guess that's the GP's contention? So, is it acceptable to have a culture based around attacking (with real hostility) non-conformity to community norms? Where does one draw the line for when you can be mean to people on the internet? My personal line comes when hostility starts leaking out of your community - but I'm happy to hear the other points of view.
- DanBC 11y ago> But if the very definition of a "user" is around anonymity then by declaring a personal information you kind of are attempting to make the conversation about you (which I presume is contrary to the whole point of 4chan?). we don't see the same level of hatred around people using tripcodes.
- Ntrails 11y agoI don't understand - can you elaborate? Googling suggests that a tripcode is essentially marking posts as being from a consistent source rather than any change to the poster themselves being annonymous? The question is if someone started posting on there about being tall - would there be vitriol? My guess is not but I really don't know.
- DanBC 11y agoA consistent source is not anonymous. It's linked to the trip code.
- anon4 11y agono, you misunderstand. Tits or GTFO is the jerky, but perfectly valid variant of "This community doesn't give half a shit what your gender is". It's one thing if it just comes up, like someone asks you something male-specific and you reply "actually I don't know, because I'm a girl". It's completely different, and it's the case for which Tits or GTFO is reserved, when someone starts a thread with "Hi guyyyyyys, I'm a GIRL who..." No. I don't care. You can be a green-skinned 6-tittied hermaphrodite prostitute from the Vega cluster and I still won't care. This board is for discussing <insert board topic here> and we won't let you derail it or beg for special treatment just because you have a vagina. If you want it so much, here's your special treatment: Tits or GTFO. Like it or not, women often get special treatment online at other forums (and this article itself presents such a case, though a negative one) and some do exploit it (holy shit a person exploits social prejudices, hold the phone). The 4chan userbase (for the most part) has decided they want none of it and unless it's relevant to the discussion, your personal details are unwanted and will garner hostile responses, ranging from "nobody cares", to "not your fucking blog", to "Tits or GTFO". P.S. Go on /cgl/, a board with a majority female population, and start a thread with "Hey girls, wanna talk to a man?", see how it goes.
