RPC has won indeed, in many different ways. Classic RISC made its way into the embedded, low power devices and clearly won, at least by the sheer numbers of chips produced. Formal methods settled strongly in the hardware design [1]. Distributed computing made a very strong comeback (map-reduce, clouds, all that). So, in general, it's very outdated.
