Having sat in on a fair number of interviews, there's a lot churning under the surface, particularly at smaller shops, and I'd strongly agree that factors beyond your control are a big deal. One thing I like to do is look at trajectories of companies I had interesting interviews at. It's always enjoyable seeing what I didn't land in (sometimes good, sometimes bad, but always an interesting perspective, since I had a fleeting glimpse into the "inside").
