I am surprised this hasn't been brought up already: the easiest and most reliable way to generate GUIDs is to use existing APIs, available on near-every platform out there. These blocks of code have been around for years if not decades and have been well-vetted and optimized. Rolling your own is just a poor use of time and invites error. Unless you're doing this for homework or have some free time and are curious about what's under the proverbial hood, don't reinvent the wheel.
