My money is on the later. I recall reading an article in which Groupon got extremely tight-lipped about the viability of its business model. Like someone asked a few questions about how sustainable it would be once it scaled and then the person representing Groupon basically went into siege mode and gave only short, resentful answers. Wish I bookmarked that one.
