Article rings true for me. Growing up in the Khaleej, I saw an increasing influence of the Salafi mindset around me. Maybe as a child I didn't pay attention to it, but in my teens and certainly visiting now after a decade, I see a very different, more conservative region. As an aside, The Mersault Investigation by Kamel Daoud (author of this article) is a very interesting book. I recommend it to people who have liked The Stranger.
