They are only a distraction till they become commonplace. Pilots aren't distracted by Geese.
- TeMPOraL 11y agoBut then again, geese behave more predictably than drones and are smarter than pilots of those drones.
- pj_mukh 11y agoGeese have actually taken down planes on various occasions, I don't see the FAA regulating herding techniques around airports. Wait, or do they? I'm not sure.
- TeMPOraL 11y agoThere are various means airports employ to get rid of stray birds. Unfortunately, most won't be effective against stray drones. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_strike#Countermeasures https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_strike#Countermeasures
- spike021 11y agoWouldn't this new boundary system have the same or similar kind of benefit as using those bird countermeasures, though?
- TeMPOraL 11y agoI think that's the point of it. It still doesn't solve the problem of cheap drones (i.e. those without GPS), though I'm not sure if they are an issue near airports.
- EGreg 11y agoWhen they become commonplace is when you have to worry. Not only about rogue individuals launching programmable drones to do malicious things, with no accountability (first time robots would be out in public with access to so many people) But also just simple failure rates and gravity
- pj_mukh 11y agoWhat are these malicious things you envision people doing with a drone the size of your laptop? Specifically something this geo-fencing stops? I truly want to understand this public hysteria.
- EGreg 11y agoThe geofencing is a good thing. They can drop grenades or anything else.
- donatj 11y agoBy "robots" are you implying they are autonomous? They're not. Do you foresee the skies blackened by Drones? All these issues have existed in RC planes for years and I'd say they're only slightly more common.
- EGreg 11y agoYes, many drones can be programmed, and therefore can fly autonomously. China has banned export of their drones. RC planes are remote controlled at least. This is the first time we have autonomous robots among humans.
