The characterization of the first option as North Korea is not honest. They kidnap people and make it hard to get out---but no one is proposing that. They're worried about people getting in. We generally consider DPRK a failure because we watch how people are voting with their feet. But by that same measure the US is wildly successful. So I don't think "like North Korea" is a fair comparison.

Yes, I know. And the incentives of that reality, for the elite, are to become rootless and disinterested (or worse: exploitative), while the proles just become resentful. I don't get the sense that anyone is making that connection.
